Your SaaS product might be powerful, but if visitors can't understand what it does within seconds, they might leave before discovering its value.

That's where a SaaS homepage video comes in. Instead of making visitors read through paragraphs of text or figure things out from screenshots, a short video can show what your product does, how it works, and why it matters.

But does it actually make a difference?

We studied 1,019 SaaS homepages and found that only 21.7% featured a video.

Here's where it gets interesting.

Websites with video and company-added video schema had a median visit duration of 2 minutes 49 seconds, compared with just 1 minute 18 seconds for websites without video. That's roughly 2.2 times longer.

While this doesn't prove that video alone keeps visitors engaged, the findings suggest that a well-implemented homepage video could play an important role in giving potential customers more time to understand your product.

And that's just one of the findings we uncovered.

Why Should SaaS Companies Consider a Homepage Video?

Here's something that surprised us.

In our study of 1,019 SaaS homepages, we found that 78.3% didn't feature a video at all.

And we're not just talking about smaller startups. Even established SaaS companies with strong websites were largely relying on text, screenshots, and static graphics to explain their products.

But here's the question.

If even the biggest SaaS companies aren't using homepage videos, why should you?

You might have a platform with dozens of features, complicated dashboards, or workflows that take several steps to complete. Trying to communicate all of that through paragraphs of text can quickly become overwhelming.

That's where a homepage video comes in.

Instead of telling visitors what your software does, you can actually show them.

And animation gives you even more freedom.

You can simplify complicated workflows, show how different features connect, and visualize processes that aren't immediately visible on a screen. You can even combine animation with real product footage to give viewers a clearer picture of how everything works.

But a homepage video shouldn't try to explain your entire product.

Its job is to introduce what you're offering, communicate why it matters, and give visitors enough confidence to explore further.

My advice? If explaining your product takes several paragraphs, consider whether you could show it more clearly in a short video.

Sometimes, seeing the product in action is all it takes for things to click.

What Makes a Good SaaS Homepage Video?

A good SaaS homepage video needs to be attention-grabbing and engaging from the very first seconds.

Here's one thing to remember: people who land on your website are probably already curious about your brand or product.

But that doesn't mean they'll stick around.

You have a limited window to capture their attention, build on that initial curiosity, and give them a reason to keep exploring.

Start with your buyer's problem.

Show visitors a challenge they recognize, then introduce your product as the solution, just like we did in our project with SmartAssets above.

In our study of 1,750 B2B product demos , question-led openings were associated with stronger engagement.

Show the product, don't just describe it.

Use screen recordings to demonstrate actual features and custom animation to simplify complicated workflows or visualize processes that aren't visible on screen.

This is where professional explainer video production can make a difference. You can turn complex software into a distinctive visual story that reflects your brand.

Keep your message focused.

You don't need to demonstrate every feature. Focus on your product's biggest benefit and give each scene a purpose.

Finally, end with a clear call to action. Whether it's booking a demo or starting a free trial, make the next step obvious.

Our research found that 54% of voiced product demos lacked a clear CTA. Don't let your homepage video make the same mistake.

The goal is to turn someone's initial curiosity into enough interest to explore your product further.

Does Having a Homepage Video Make Visitors Stay Longer?

Think about it. If someone's landed on your website, chances are they're already curious about what you offer.

But getting them there is one thing. Getting them to stay is another.

So, if your homepage video gives them something interesting to watch and helps them understand your product, surely they'll stick around a little longer, right?

Well, here's what our research found.

SaaS homepages with company-added video schema had a median visit duration of 2:49, compared with just 1:18 for homepages without video.

That's 2.2 times longer.

And interestingly, the pattern remained even when we accounted for differences in company size and website authority.

Of course, other factors like website design, content quality, and user experience can also influence how long visitors stay.

But our findings reveal a positive association between company-added video schema and longer homepage visits.

It doesn't prove that video or schema alone caused people to stay longer.

For marketers, the important point is that creating a video is only one part of making it effective. Its content, placement, and implementation all deserve attention.

My advice? Don't just put a video on your homepage and expect results. Make sure it's useful to visitors, supports your message, and works naturally with the rest of your website.

Can a Homepage Video Help Keep Visitors Interested?

Well, potentially yes, but perhaps not as much as you'd expect.

Our research found that homepages with video and schema had an average bounce rate of 40%, compared with 42% for those without video.

That's only a two-percentage-point difference.

More interestingly, 20.7% of homepages with video and schema achieved bounce rates below 30%, compared with just 12.6% of homepages without video.

But remember, this is correlation, not causation. Other factors, including website design and content quality, could also explain the difference.

Still, there's another benefit worth considering.

A homepage video can act as a quick introduction to your product, helping visitors decide whether it's right for them.

Think of it as a filter. Some visitors might realize your product isn't what they need and leave, while others might become more interested in exploring further.

That could potentially lead to better-qualified inquiries, although our study didn't measure lead quality.

My advice? Don't focus on bounce rates alone. Track whether visitors watch your video, explore your product, or take the next step toward becoming a customer.

What Is Video Schema Markup and Why Does It Matter?

Infographic showing video schema markup findings from a study of 1,019 SaaS homepages. Of the 221 homepages featuring video, 60.6% lacked video schema. Implementation rates varied by player: HubSpot (100%), Wistia (66.7%), and YouTube (9.8%).

You've spent time and money creating a homepage video. But have you made sure search engines can properly understand it?

That's where video schema markup comes in.

Simply put, video schema is information added to your website that helps search engines understand what your video is about, including its title, description, thumbnail, and duration.

And surprisingly, most SaaS companies are overlooking it.

In our study of 1,019 SaaS homepages , here's what we found:

  • 798 homepages (78.3%) didn't feature any video.
  • 21 homepages (21.7%) featured at least one video.
  • Of those 221 homepages with video, 134 (60.6%) had no video schema.
  • Only 87 homepages (39.4%) had video schema, including 51 with company-added schema and 36 with schema automatically added by Vimeo.

So, even among SaaS companies that have invested in homepage video, six out of ten haven't implemented video schema.

And the results varied depending on which video player they used.

Video playerHomepages with schema
HubSpot100% (7 of 7)
Wistia66.7% (24 of 36)
YouTube9.8% (4 of 41)

Of course, these figures represent the homepages we studied. They don't mean HubSpot always handles schema correctly or that Google can't discover YouTube videos without it.

What they do show is that you shouldn't assume your video player has taken care of everything.

So, what should you do?

If you've invested in a professionally produced homepage video, ask your developer to check whether the appropriate video schema is in place. You can also use Google's Rich Results Test to check your page.

After all, creating a great video is only part of the job. You also need to make sure it's implemented properly.

My advice? Don't let the technical setup become an afterthought. Your video, website, and SEO should work together.

How Can You Get More Value From Your Homepage Video?

One thing we always tell our clients is that reusable assets are worth planning for from the beginning.

You might be creating a 60–90-second homepage video, but that doesn't mean it can only live on your website.

With the right planning, you can turn that video into shorter clips for LinkedIn, paid ads, and sales presentations.

Video

And this is exactly what we did with GotPhoto.

We created a video for their homepage that they later repurposed across different platforms.

But it didn't stop there.

As we continued working together, we reused graphics, animations, and other creative assets across multiple projects. This meant we didn't have to start from scratch every time, saving both our team and GotPhoto time that could be spent planning the next project.

That's the advantage of thinking beyond a single video.

Of course, don't just create these assets and forget about them.

Monitor video plays, watch time, CTA clicks, and conversions to understand what's working and what needs improvement.

And remember to keep your video updated. SaaS products change constantly, so when new features are released or interfaces change, update the relevant scenes instead of producing an entirely new video.

My advice? Treat your homepage video as a long-term marketing investment, not a one-off project. The more you can reuse, update, and improve it, the more value you'll get from your production budget.

Conclusion

So, does having a video on your SaaS homepage make a difference?

Potentially, yes. But simply adding one isn't enough.

Our research into 1,019 SaaS homepages found that websites with company-added video schema were associated with longer visits and slightly lower bounce rates. That doesn't prove video caused those improvements, but it does show why the overall website experience deserves attention.

And that's the important part.

A good homepage video should help visitors understand your product, show them why it matters, and give them a reason to take the next step.

But don't forget about the website itself. Page speed, video loading times, placement, and proper SEO implementation all matter. Even a great video can become frustrating if it slows down your homepage.

And remember, your video doesn't have to be a one-off investment. With the right planning, you can reuse its animations, graphics, and footage across future marketing and sales campaigns.

My advice? Invest in a homepage video that works for your buyers, not just one that looks impressive.
