What is the difference between 2D and 3D animation, and which is better for a SaaS product?
2D animation is flat and built from vector shapes, while 3D adds depth, lighting and a greater sense of physical space. For most SaaS products, 2D is the more practical choice because software, dashboards and workflows naturally translate well into a flat visual format.
It is usually faster to produce, less expensive and easier to update when your product changes. 3D becomes more useful when you need to show a physical product, hardware, or something that benefits from being viewed spatially, such as data moving through a complex system.
Even a 3D-led video comes back to 2D for titles, typography and branding.
What type of 2D animated video does a B2B SaaS company need?
Most B2B SaaS companies need an explainer video first, to show what the product does and why it matters. After that, the most useful videos are usually a product demo, onboarding videos and short feature release videos.
Each one works at a different stage of the funnel. An explainer video sits at the top, on your homepage and in ads, for people who don't know you yet. A product demo supports sales at the bottom of the funnel, for buyers who already understand the problem and want to see the product working. Onboarding videos help new users reach value faster, and feature release videos keep existing customers up to date.
Because they're all built in 2D from the same assets, one project can be adapted into shorter versions for social, ads and sales decks without starting again.
Can you animate our product's UI?
Yes. We rebuild your interface as clean, on-brand animated assets and show the exact flow a real user takes, instead of recording your screen.
You don't need a finished product or any animation software. We work from whatever you already have, like Figma files, screenshots, a Loom screen recording, or access to the platform so we can learn it ourselves. Usually one call with someone from your product team is enough to agree on the flow. For a launch, we can animate straight from your designs before the feature goes live.
We simplify the UI on purpose, keeping only the screens and elements that support the message.
Does 2D animation work for B2B marketing?
Yes, especially for complex products, because people understand information better when words are paired with moving pictures. It helps buyers see what your product does faster than text or static screenshots can.
Richard Mayer's research on multimedia learning found that words with pictures lead to better understanding than words alone. A 2007 meta-analysis by Höffler and Leutner, covering 26 studies, found that animation beat static images, particularly when movement itself was important to understanding what was being explained.
Most software works that way, with data, steps and screens changing over time. That does not mean animation automatically improves conversion. Its job is to help buyers understand the message more clearly. Your offer, sales process and wider funnel still determine what happens after that.
Is 2D animation still worth it now that AI can make video?
Yes. AI tools can generate footage quickly, but B2B videos often need something more specific: an accurate product, a clear narrative and visuals that follow your actual brand.
For a buyer trying to understand whether your software fits their needs, accuracy matters. We use AI ourselves where it speeds up parts of production, such as early script development or generating raw visual material. The finished work still needs to be designed, edited and animated so the UI, typography, branding and message all work together.
Explainer videos, which rely heavily on 2D animation, still make up 58% of the videos we produce.
Should you use a 2D animation agency, freelancer, or animation tool for marketing videos?
For B2B marketing videos, a specialist 2D animation studio is usually the best option, because one team handles the script, storyboard, animation and sound design. Freelancer marketplaces and template tools cost less, and they suit simpler or internal videos.
With a studio, you share your idea, audience, brand and goals, and you get a finished video built for that purpose. Freelancers on Upwork or Fiverr are the cheapest option for one simple asset, but you rely on one person with no backup. Template tools like Vyond or Animaker are fine for internal videos, and they rarely look good enough for a homepage.
When you compare studios, ask to see work for software companies, check whether the pricing is published, and ask for a sample built on your own product.
Should we hire an in-house motion designer or use a 2D animation studio?
Hiring in-house makes sense when you have enough ongoing work to keep a motion designer busy consistently. For many startups and mid-market teams, a studio or creative subscription gives you access to a broader range of skills without having to build the whole function internally.
One motion designer may be excellent at animation but still need support with scripting, storyboarding, illustration, sound or larger production periods. A studio or agency like Motion already has those roles filled by specialists and can scale the team up for a launch or down when demand is quieter.
Our subscription is designed for teams that need that ongoing flexibility. You get access to a creative team for a monthly fee and can use your credits across video, animation and design work.
How much does 2D animation cost?
2D animation with us starts at $3,480 for a fully custom 30-second video on our Basic fixed price, or $4,080 on Premium, which adds the extensive storyboard stage. A 60-second Premium explainer is $5,140, while custom 60-second 2D explainers across the market usually cost between $3,000 and $12,000.
Premium includes storyboard planning, up to five rounds of storyboard revisions and two rounds of animation revisions, so we recommend it for anything with more than one idea in it. Basic works well for shorter, more straight forward videos. If you need video every month, the subscription starts at $3,680 a month and costs less per video. You can see every package on our pricing page.
Every project is scoped around what you need the video to achieve. If you're working to a set budget, tell us early and we'll shape the video around it. There's no contract to sign before you start and no minimum commitment.
How long does 2D animation take to produce?
Our standard delivery for a 30 second 2D animated video is 8 business days, plus your review time. If you have a launch or a fundraising deadline, the super fast option delivers in 4 business days for 30% more.
The stages are script, storyboard, animation and sound design, and nothing moves forward until you've approved the stage before it. Quick feedback on the storyboard is the easiest way to keep the timeline short. If you have a fixed deadline, tell us at the start and we can plan the production and review dates around it.
What happens to the video when our product changes?
Because 2D animation is built from editable vector files, we can update only the scenes that changed instead of making a new video. You also receive the source files, so the video stays yours.
SaaS products change often, with new features, a redesigned dashboard or a rebrand. Updating a few UI screens in an existing video is much faster and cheaper than starting over, and you can keep the same voiceover and structure if the message hasn't changed.
Can I see a sample before I commit?
Yes. Send us your website or a short brief and we will create a free sample within 48 hours.
There is no payment or commitment required. The sample lets you see how your own product and brand could look in our style rather than judging us only from work made for other companies. If the direction feels right, we can then scope the full video around your brief.
